Why I'm Running

There are three main reasons why I chose to run for Utah House:

  • Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the Country, and Cache County is one of the fastest-growing areas.  We have one chance to 'get it right'.  Platitudes and the same old actions will end up making us look like everywhere else.  Our communities need someone with perspective and experience.  I’ve lived all over the country and have seen what works and what doesn’t, and I’ve spent 4 years on the Cache County Council working on land use issues.  I’m up to speed and can be effective day 1.

  • Our communities are some of the safest anywhere, but we aren’t problem-free.  The legislature made well-meaning but misguided changes to the criminal justice system a few years ago.  A sustained effort need to be made to update the code with a focus on results, not intentions.  Our public safety officials should have the tools they need to keep us safe AND protect our rights.  In addition to public safety, I’ve worked with the health department on physical and mental health issues.  You deserve a representative that is focused on addressing root causes, not just reactive actions.

  • Competent governance is sorely needed today.  Every person needs to have confidence and trust in the institutions that make our day-to-day life work.  We need legislators who are interested in governing, not grandstanding.  Lawmakers focused on effective policy rather than empty performance. My full four-year term on the county council was spent working on improving internal controls, expanding transparency, and updating code language.  I have a solid track record of effectively legislating.

When I go to the polls, I look for a candidate who takes responsibility for the things they can control and doesn’t grandstand around the issues they can’t solve.  I appreciate hard work, humility, and salt-of-the-earth ethics.  Now more than ever, I look for elected officials who can face the reality of the fiscal challenges we have and are willing to address them.  I’m committed to being that type of representative and would be honored to earn your trust and vote.

My Priorities

Cache Valley is growing, whether we like it or not.  While we have grown significantly over the last 50 years, we haven't lost our identity and still maintain that Cache Valley feel.  I’m committed to making sure we retain our unique character and don’t end up looking like another Ogden, Salt Lake, or Provo…

I believe we need to make sure the system works on all fronts.  I will fight to ensure public safety is properly funded, has the resources to complete their mission, AND the justice system works for everyone.  Community safety isn’t just about law enforcement, I believe the health department (both physical and mental) has a huge role to play in the safety of our community.

Calvin Coolidge said “We need more of the Office Desk and less of the Show Window in politics.  Let men in office substitute the midnight oil for the limelight."  I firmly believe government has a few key roles to play and I’ve demonstrated I’m focused on those.  Let’s make sure what government should do, it does well.
